Whisperings

Whisperings came to me,
   as I stood transfixed,
Before the sea of life
as though a man of stone.

Whisperings of immortality and death,
Whisperings of happiness and pain,
and yet, no, not before the sea.

The sea was all around me,
   front to back and sideways.
Barely afloat above the terrifying abyss,
   then it came to me.

What I'd accepted as truth but could not grasp.
The leap unafraid into the void,
could be done, here, in this place, now.

I accepted, let myself be swallowed,
   and so, it was good.
